  1. DOS/Windows:
  2.     This describes how to start using the World Factbook.
  3.     See the file "contents.txt" for more information about what is
  4.     included on this CD-ROM.

  6.     Features of the World Factbook 1993 Edition:
  7.           a) TextWare (DOS):
  8.                    (Features full text, plus appendices, consular notes, 
  9.                     background notes, fast searches, photos, maps, charts,
  10.                     and more!)
  11.           b) Toolbook (Windows):
  12.                    (Features Geographical Navigation + selection,
  13.                    photo slideshow, maps, charts and more.)

  18. WINDOWS:
  19.     You must have Windows 3.0 or above.
  20.     Options:
  21.     ** Run from DOS without installing anything, steps:
  22.         1. You must be in the drive that contains the CD.
  23.             (Do this by typing the letter that is the CD drive,
  24.             E.G. type "E:"
  25.             where E is the letter assigned to the your CD drive.)
  26.         2. Type "cd \windows" to get into the WINDOWS directory.
  27.         3. Type "WFB", which runs a batch file from DOS that
  28.             launches Windows with Toolbook and opens the 
  29.             World Factbook "Book".
  30.     ** Run from DOS and install a Program Manager ICON, steps:
  31.         1. You must be in the drive that contains the CD.
  32.             (Do this by typing the letter that is the CD drive,
  33.             E.G. type "E:"
  34.             where E is the letter assigned to your CD drive.)
  35.         2. Type "cd \windows" to get into the WINDOWS directory.
  36.         3. Type "WFBINST", which runs a batch file from DOS that
  37.             launches windows and installs a program ICON into
  38.             a new group. The program asks you the letter of your  
  39.             CD-ROM and the new name for the program manager group.
  40.             This only needs to be done once! Then you can run 
  41.             from windows after the one-time installation.
  42.     ** Run from WINDOWS install a Program Manager ICON, steps:
  43.         1. Launch windows
  44.         2. Do "New" from the program manager menu
  45.         3. Specify the new items "Properties"
  46.             command line: x:\windows\tbook.exe x:\windows\wfb1992.tbk
  47.             working dir:  x:\windows
  48.             WHERE x is the letter of your CD-ROM drive.
  49.     ** Consult your window documentation for other options.

  52. DOS:
  53.     One of the batch files in the DOS directory will get you started.
  54.     Steps required:             
  55.         1. You must be in the drive that contains the CD.
  56.             (Do this by typing the letter that is the CD drive,
  57.             E.G. type "E:"
  58.             where E is the letter assigned to your CD drive.)
  59.         2. Type "cd \PC" to get into the PC (DOS) directory.
  60.         3. Type "WFB" to start TextWare 4.0 with the World Factbook.
  61.         4. Other monitor types:
  62.             See the "OTHER.TXT" file in the "DOS" directory.
  63.             Use the OTHER.BAT batch file using the directions
  64.             in the "OTHER.TXT" file.
  65.         5. Press "Enter" when the cursor is within a highlighted area
  66.             to view images or jump to other sections.
  67.         6. For more detailed help, open the TextWare documentation
  68.             provided online with TextWare software.
